Rhode Island School of Design '26

My name is Alessandra Morabito, and I attend the Rhode Island School of Design, where I study Painting. I’m exploring the idea of constructing a surface —a layering of meaning, memory, and change. Each layer adding depth, context, and a sense of evolution. This concept shapes my artistic process, which revolves around layering paint and allowing each successive layer to interact with and speak to the one before it. My paintings hold the echoes of past decisions, marks, and gestures, creating a complex web of relationships between the layers. It’s not just about depth, but about building meaning — a record of time and memory, reflecting how the past informs the present. Using abstraction, I focus on, often overlooked moments and the subtle shifts that occur over time. I work with unstretched canvases laid flat on the floor, which removes the constraints of the traditional easel, enabling a more spontaneous, intuitive approach. This experimental setup encourages discovery and exploration, often leading to unexpected outcomes. The process itself becomes vital to the final piece, making the painting both a visual and tactile record of its creation.
